Gender activities of NIM - Measures and financial support

While the percentage of female students and graduates has been increasing the last years, many female scientists quit the academic career after finishing their PhD. The aim of the NIM Family and Women Support  Program (NIM-Familien- und Frauenförderprogramm, NIM-FF) is in particular to increase the number of female scientists and to improve the working conditions for women and families.

Funding of laboratory assistance or child care

Laboratory Assistance

Excellent young female academics (members of the NIM graduate program, NIM-PIs - max. W2) could be supported during their pregnancy and/or upbringing of their children until the age of 5 (or in exceptional cases until the age of 6) by the employment of a laboratory assistant (max. 400,--€ per month).

Child care (scholarship)

Excellent graduate students (members of the NIM graduate program)  with children until the age of 2 (or in exceptional cases until the age of 3) could be supported by a scholarship for child care in order to continue their scientific work. This support includes the total or partly payment of a day nanny or a place in a day nursery (Kindertagesstätte)  (max. 400,--€ per month). The payment will be effected directly to the nursery or to the nanny, respectively. The scholarship will be scaled according to the total net income of the household.

Application procedure for the funding of lab assistance or child care

Proposals will only be accepted in complete written form. The submission of the following documents is essential for processing your application. The Executive Committee (EC) of NIM, which meets on a regular basis will decide upon the proposals.

Financial support during scientific events

Child care during conference trips (scholarship)

Excellent graduate students (members of the NIM graduate program) with children until the age of 5 (or in exceptional cases until the age of 6) could get financial support for extraordinary child care during conference trips (max. 300,--€ per year).

Financial support for gender specific events

Female scientists (female members of the NIM graduate program, graduate students paid by NIM, female NIM-PIs and NIM associates) could get full financial support for gender specific events, gender specific academies as well as events offered by the women’s representative of the universities in which NIM is part of.

Trainings/workshops

Excellent young female academics (female members of the graduate program, graduate students paid by NIM, female NIM-PIs - max. W2 - and NIM associates) could get selective aid and financial support for individual trainings and workshops.

Measures for the promotion of women

Meetings for all interested female scientists

These meetings provide an opportunity for a regular exchange and to get to know each other. The female scientists are made aware of the latest updates on gender issues. They can express their wishes and suggest improvements.

Elternstammtisch

The Elternstammtisch is a platform where young parents meet in order to discuss carrier topics, work-life-balance, child care issues and simply to get to know each other.

Committees, Workshops and Colloquia

NIM pursues an increase in the number of female scientists on its committees, at workshops and colloquia thereby purposely addressing more female scientists and inviting more female speakers.

Exchange with female speakers

After or during a workshop or colloquium, interested female scientists have the opportunity to meet with female speakers in order to learn about their careers, their decision-making processes and their current situations.

Suggestion of a mentor for female students and PhD-Students

If female students and PhD-students ask for a research mentor, NIM can provide suggestions. A research mentor will act as a ‘role model’ and advise on career management and the development of the student’s scientific profile.

Training courses

Training courses offered at the LMU and the participating universities and institutes of NIM are open to all interested female NIM students and junior researchers. NIM will bear the costs for these courses.

Child care

NIM will provide information about day nurseries and kindergartens that are open for university employees.

NIM Mentoring Program (NIMm)

Female and male PhD-students are coaching highly motivated and highly skilled sixth-formers in order to awaken their interest for the Nanosciences.
