Matthias Rief becomes coordinator of new Collaborative Research Centre

In January 2010 a new Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) starts in Munich entitled „Forces in Biomolecular Systems“. Scientists with background in physics, biophysics, biochemistry or cell biology will collaborate to investigate mechanical forces of single molecules up to complex cell systems. Coordinator of the SFB is going to be Matthias Rief, Professor for Biophysics at the Technische Universität München (TUM) and Principle Investigator at the Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM).

The research project is divided into 16 subunits, which are worked on by scientists of the TUM, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. For the first research period of four years the German Research Foundation (DFG) provides 8.4 million Euro. A prolongation of the SFB up to a total of twelve years is possible depending on the scientific results.
